2 Days in Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum
Exploring Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum in 2 days was the second part of my 9 days trip to Mexico. I enjoyed Cancun and Isla Mojeres in 2 days and drove to Playa del Carmen in the evening where I was staying. It was an hour drive from Cancun.
Staying in Playa del Carmen
In Playa del Carmen, I was staying in The St. Martin Boutique Hotel for 2 nights and I bought the deal from Groupon for $86 for 2 nights. It was a great deal at such a price. The hotel was very clean, quiet and safe. It was decorated in Mexican style with a pool in the middle. It was also at walking distance form the famous 5th Avenue of Playa del Carmen which is the main street for all the fun.
Playa Del Carmen
After checking into my hotel and taking a hot shower, I decided to explore the hustling 5th avenue. Both sides of the street were occupied by small shops, fine dining restaurants, local arts and crafts stores. The weather was beautiful and I decided to enjoy some street tacos at a fine outdoor dining restaurant. After the dinner, I walked all the way to the end of the 5th avenue where you can enjoy the beach and local artists displaying their skills. I walked back to my room after a relaxing evening to prepare for my next day trip to Cozumel.
Cozumel
Early in the morning, I took the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. It cost me 300 pesos for a return trip and the ride is approximately 40 minutes one way. The ferry ride is very enjoyable and has live performances and music throughout the ride and also offers drinks for purchase. After getting off the ferry, there are many options to explore the island. I decided to rent a jeep and drive around the whole island and explore the key points. The jeep rental for a whole day was 500 pesos. I started from one corner of the island and swim at some of the best beaches on the island. I stopped at some good restaurants to try the local food and enjoy the views. It was one of the main highlight of my trip to Mexico and I would definitely spend more time on Cozumel. After a whole day of exploring the Cozumel island, swimming in blue water beaches, driving around the whole island and tasting some delicious food, I took the ferry back to Playa del Carmen and returned to my hotel after an unforgettable day of my life.
Tulum
On my second day, I set on the road to explore Tulum, which was an hour drive from my hotel in Playa del Carmen. Tulum is famous for its beautiful beaches and ruins of an ancient Mayan port city. After parking the car, I walked around this historical site which was overlooking this beautiful blue water beach. After exploring the Mayan ruins, I took the stairs down to the beach to cool off in the ocean. This site is also very famous and usually crowded with tourists. After spending a couple of hours, exploring this beautiful site, I decided to go visit a nearby cenote. I grabbed a quick bite from Tulum and enjoyed a beautiful display of skills by a group of locals hanging from a pole with ropes. I couldn’t find the cenote since I got lost but luckily I decided to give ride to a couple standing on the road side. They were European tourists and they were going to one of the cenote as well and directed me to the location. It was a fun experience.
After spending a couple of hours in cenote, I returned to Cancun airport to take my flight to Mexico, which was the 3rd part of my 9 days trip to Mexico. 2 days is not enough to explore these beautiful cities and I would definitely go back for week long trips to explore more of what Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum has to offer. I returned the car at the airport and went on my last leg of the trip.
